Cancer is recognized as the third leading cause of deaths in Kenya and which account for almost 7 percent of all mortality in the country. Kenyan healthcare authorities and international organizations are devoted towards the task of reducing deaths due to cancer. However, lack of coordination among agencies and inefficiency and overlapping of resourceful expenditure are unable to provide relief to an ailing population. Although there are many types of cancers affecting the Kenyan population, breast cancer is the third most common cause of death in the country after cardiovascular and infectious diseases. Breast cancer accounts for over 23 percent of cancer related deaths in this African nation.

Causes and Treatment Options for Breast Cancer

There are several types of breast cancers which typically differ in their capacity to metastasize to other parts of the body. However, causes of breast cancer are not fully known yet but there are several risk factors which have been identified. While breast cancer is normally diagnosed through self-examination of breasts, mammography, ultrasound testing and biopsy, treatment options which depend upon the type of cancer include lumpectomy, mastectomy, chemotherapy, radiation therapy and hormone therapy.

    ● Lumpectomy – Lumpectomy is breast cancer surgery which is designed to remove only a portion of the breast affected with cancer. The extent of lumpectomy is typically determined by the size and location of breast tumor. Only the breast lump along with some marginal tissue is removed during lumpectomy surgery.
    ● Mastectomy – The entire breast tissue is removed during mastectomy. However, a skin sparing mastectomy is also performed for women who are considering immediate reconstruction. Other types of mastectomies include radical mastectomy and modified radical mastectomy which involve removal of axillary lymph nodes and chest wall muscle in addition to breast tissue.
    ● Chemotherapy – Chemotherapy is treatment of breast cancer with help of special medications. Chemotherapy drugs are either administered orally or through intravenous injections. Performed in different settings, chemotherapy can either be adjuvant chemotherapy or neoadjuvant chemotherapy. Chemotherapy is also used for treating advanced cases of breast cancer when the disease has spread to other parts of the body.
    ● Radiation Therapy – Radiation therapy meant for breast cancer utilizes high energy rays for destroying cancerous cells. External beam radiation therapy and brachytherapy are the two types of radiation therapy options applied as treatment for breast cancer. External beam radiation therapy utilizes a device located outside the body for delivering beam of radiation on the cancerous tissue. Brachytherapy is a type of internal radiation therapy which uses radioactive pellets or seeds that are implanted within the breast tissue near the cancer.
    ● Hormone Therapy – Hormone therapy is mostly utilized for reducing recurrence of breast cancer following lumpectomy or mastectomy. In some cases, hormone therapy is also used as adjunct treatment for breast cancer. Estrogen hormone is found to promote growth of some types of breast cancers, especially the ones containing ER positive and PR positive receptors.
